Gravel bike or mountain bike? It is the question every cyclist asks when they want to leave the tarmac. The two bikes look similar from a distance — both have wide tyres and disc brakes — but they are built for fundamentally different terrain and different ways of riding. This guide compares them honestly, terrain by terrain, and explains which is the right choice for riding in Morocco.
A gravel bike is a drop-bar bicycle designed for mixed-surface riding — mostly firm unpaved tracks with some tarmac links. It has wider tyres than a road bike (38–45c), a more relaxed geometry for stability and comfort over long days, disc brakes, and lower gearing for climbing. A mountain bike is a flat-bar bicycle designed for off-road terrain, from forest tracks to technical singletrack. It has wide knobby tyres (2.0–2.4 inches), suspension (front only on a hardtail, front and rear on a full-suspension bike), a robust frame, and very low gearing for steep, technical climbing. It is built for control and capability on rough ground, not for speed or distance on firm surfaces.
This is the core distinction. A gravel bike excels on compacted earth, gravel roads, farm tracks and firm pistes — the surfaces that make up the vast majority of Morocco’s unpaved network. It is also efficient on the tarmac links between pistes. A mountain bike excels on loose, rocky, rooty and technical terrain — singletrack, steep rocky climbs, and descents that demand suspension.
On a firm piste, a gravel bike is faster, smoother and less fatiguing — the drop bars give you hand positions, the narrower tyres roll faster, and the lighter weight helps on climbs. On a technical trail, a mountain bike is safer and more capable — the suspension absorbs impacts, the wide tyres grip on loose ground, and the flat bars give leverage for technical manoeuvres. On firm surfaces, a gravel bike is meaningfully faster than a mountain bike — typically 2–4 km/h faster at the same effort, and the gap widens on tarmac. The narrower tyres, the lighter weight, and the aerodynamic drop-bar position all add up. Over a 60 km day, that is the difference between finishing fresh and finishing tired. On technical terrain, the comparison reverses — the mountain bike’s grip and suspension let you ride sections a gravel bike cannot.
A mountain bike is more comfortable on rough ground because of its suspension and wide tyres, which absorb impacts that a rigid gravel bike transmits to the rider. But on firm surfaces, a gravel bike with well-set tyre pressure (run lower than you think — 25–35 psi) is comfortable enough for long days, and the multiple hand positions on drop bars reduce hand and wrist fatigue. For multi-day distance riding on firm pistes, the gravel bike is the more comfortable choice.
Entry-level gravel bikes and hardtail mountain bikes are similarly priced. Full-suspension mountain bikes are more expensive than gravel bikes at every tier. Maintenance costs are higher for mountain bikes — suspension requires servicing, and wide knobby tyres wear faster and cost more. It depends entirely on where you ride. If your local riding is mostly firm unpaved tracks, canal paths, forest roads and the occasional tarmac link, a gravel bike is the right choice — faster, more efficient, and more versatile. If your local riding is mostly technical trails, steep rocky climbs and singletrack, a mountain bike is the right choice. If you want to do both, a gravel bike with 45c tyres covers more ground than a mountain bike covers road.
For most cyclists who want to explore — cover distance, see landscapes, ride from village to village — a gravel bike is the better single bike. It opens up the enormous network of firm unpaved routes that a road bike cannot handle and a mountain bike is too slow for.

The great routes — the Tizi n’Tichka piste, the Ounila Valley, the Draa Valley Loop — are all gravel-friendly, with only short, walkable sandy sections near the desert. A hardtail mountain bike works on these routes but is slower on the tarmac links between them.
